Professional Summary
Prof. (Dr. ) Kapil Lawrence did his M.Sc., (1986) M.Phil. (1989) and Ph.D. (1996) from Lucknow University in Biochemistry. He has also qualified National Entrance Test (NET) (CSIR-UGC) in 1989 for award of JRF. After a brief teaching stint as part-time lecturer at Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow from September 1995 till March 1996. He joined Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences Deemed University then known as Allahabad Agricultural Institute, Allahabad in 1996 as Assistant Professor. Currently, he is Professor & Head, Dept. of Molecular & Cellular Engineering. He also served as Head, Dept. of Biochemistry & Biochemical Engineering from July 2009 till July 2012. From 2006-2008 he was on deputation as Associate Professor at Dental College, Zleiten, Al Mergeb University, Al Khums, Libya teaching Biochemistry to first year students of Dental College. Research details, list of publications etc. is given under employee profile.
Area of Specialization
BiochemistryExpertise
(a) Preparation, Purification and identification of proteins from ghosts in malarial parasite infected and normal RBC. Identification of membrane proteins using SDS-PAGE.
(b) Preparation of Phosphatidylcholine and lyso-phosphatidylcholine from egg yolk through several purification procedure including chromatography and chemical modification.
(c) Preparation of pure uni-lamellar and multi-lamellar liposomes by ultracentrifugation and gel-filtration chromatography as well as lyophilization and use labeled with probes to be used as in vitro drug vehicles.
(ii) 1988-95: Department of Biochemistry, Lucknow University, Lucknow UP., INDIA as JRF and Senior Research Fellow NET-CSIR for M.Phil and Ph.D under Prof. (Dr.). P.C. Misra. The work involved:
(a) Hydroponic culture of Cicer arientum seedlings under the conditions of mineral deficiency and sufficiency in a sterile environment.
(b) Measurement of Respiratory rate and pH fluxes with highly sensitive instrument. Measurement of trans-plasma membrane electron transport activity using artificial electron acceptors such as ferricyanide, hexachloroiridate and ferric-EDTA.
(c) Isolation of purified plasma membrane vesicles (pmv) from root tissue by aqueous polymer two-phase separation technique.
(d) Purity studies encompassed spectrophotometric assay of various marker enzymes in the crude (microsomal fraction) and purified preparation pmv viz. K+ stimulated Mg2+ ATPase, NO3- sensitive ATPase azide sensitive ATPase, cytochrome c oxidase, NAD (P) H-cytochrome c reductase. Biological detergents (s) were used to determine sideness of pmv.
(e) Morphology of the fractions was studied with transmission electron microscopy.
(f) Trans-plasma membrane redox activity measurement was determined by assaying the following enzymes (spectrophotometrically): NADH: glutathione oxidoreductase.
(g) Determination of Kinetic constants Km and Ki from ATPase Km for NADH:ferricyanide oxidoreductase.
